Dan Cable, a professor of organizational behavior at London Business School and author of the new book Alive at Work: The Neuroscience of Helping Your People Love What They Do, recalls the story of how a company changed its culture – and dramatically increased its productivity – with a simple question.

Instead of drilling down on data and micromanaging its drivers, which was fostering progressively poorer performance, the leaders were told to ask their drivers: “How can I help you deliver excellent service?”

The incident is just one of many that Cable recounts in making the point that servant leadership pays huge dividends.
