While Thanksgiving is a U.S. national holiday and Advent is a universal observance for Catholics and many other Christians, for the bulk of our readers the latter observance arrives on the heels of the former – and together they inaugurate a special time of the year. This year Thanksgiving occurs on Nov. 28 and Advent begins on Dec. 1. We hope that the reflection that follows will help you prepare for this very special season and for Christmas. Unfortunately, we don’t have a source for this reflection.

* * *

A time to remember all who have supported us in our life and to thank God for our paths crossing.

A time to remember the material and spiritual gifts that have uplifted our spirit and well-being.

A time to stop outside activity and get in touch with our inner self.

A time to wonder how we became, how we are where we are and our hopes for the future.

A time to focus on all those dear to us and the joys with which they bless us.

A time to say danke, gracias, grazie, shukraan, dankie, salamat, je vous remercie, go raibh maith agat, ziekuje ci, dakujem, and whatever other words for “thank you” that are part of your culture, and to reflect on that culture’s riches and the gift it is.

A time to remember those who don’t have it as good as we do.

A time to pray for peace, unity, and the continued pursuit of truth.

A time to thank God for the comfort and sense of solidarity our religion is to us.
