There’s an invaluable resource available to every leader, but only a relatively small number of them ever become aware enough to use it.
We call those in these select ranks Effective Leaders. Steve Keating calls them Authentic Leaders.
Whatever you call them, they are way better than your garden variety positional leader. And you could be numbered among them.
The invaluable resource they use is the question – the one they ask.
In journalism, where I grew from rookie to seasoned pro, we quickly learned: “The only dumb question is the one you don’t ask.”
More broadly, we could say the only really dumb leader is the one who doesn’t ask questions.
And the super dumb ones are those too busy telling other people what to do to ever make time to listen to them.
Keating, a seasoned pro when it comes to sales and sales leadership experience who speaks dozens of times a year around the world, says the best leaders rely on their curiosity to learn invaluable lessons.
But they don’t wonder – they ask.
